Voice over IP telephony and quality of service. One thing that has gotten very, very cheap in the last 30 years is telephony. Once upon a time, making long distance calls was a pretty expensive proposition.
We old timers can remember making our calls on Sunday night or after 11 p.m. on weeknights in order to get the cheapest rates. Well, nowadays with voice over IP telephony, long distance calls are free. In fact, many international calls are even free. They just cost whatever the voice over IP service costs. All you need is an internet connection and phones and an account. And just like that, magically, you have a phone number and you can call people.
However, it’s not quite that simple. If you have very fast internet, then you might just be able to plug your phones in and make them work and not worry about them. But if your internet is a little slower, then your phones are going to need some help in order to function perfectly.
This is where Quality of Service, also known as QoS, comes into play. You need to tell your router to give phone traffic the highest priority so that if your internet speed drops, then your phone calls are still clear. Things like big downloads will be affected more dramatically, but that’s not going to be such a problem. If you can’t communicate with the people who are calling your business, that’s a huge problem. So for this reason, even though it’s pretty simple to plug phones into your network and to watch them light up and connect to a remote server so that you can start making calls,
You really should consider hiring a professional to fine-tune your router so that your phone traffic gets the highest priority. I’ve seen phones coughing and gagging on 50 megabit internet connections. That’s pretty fast. But even at that speed, they need some help.
