I **LOVE** VMWare. And I really love VMWare 2.0.
But, despite its blazing speed improvement and improved console experience, it had a problem on my Ubuntu 8.10 system.
Notice I said had.
My keyboard mapping was fubarred on the console window. My back arrow key didn't work, neither did my delete key. Other keys may have been affected too, but these were the two that I noticed.
Then, I found this website that provides three fixes.
In my case, the fix that worked was this one:
Edit /etc/vmware/config as root.
Add this line: xkeymap.nokeycodeMap = true
Restart your virtual machine.
That's all it took for me! There are two other fixes listed at the site if you're not as lucky as I was.

Thanks for this. I setup a link back here in an entry on my blog.
I'm also a big fan of VMWare, and I was pleased when VMWare Server 2.0 installed and the modules compiled without any patches under Fedora 10 last week.
I have to admit to being really annoyed with the keymapping and being unable to attache USB devices to my XP Guest OS. These are pretty significant regressions in usability/functionality over Server 1.0, and I'm not very happy about them. Nor do I like the Web-based interface.
Yet you seem pretty happy, based on your writing here. The fact that these things are "broken" in 2.0 but worked fine in 1.0 don't bother you?
Anyway, I was glad to see Ubuntu suffered the same issues I had under Fedora 10.

Thanks much for this. It really helped.
But it was not enough for me to "Restart the
virtual machine", at least the way I understand this.
Did you mean to say "Restart the VMware Server" ?
On my system (Ubuntu Karmic - YMMV), that's
/etc/init.d/vmware restart
Thanks,
